Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was developed out of the University of California, Santa Cruz in the 70s by John Grinder, a linguist, and Richard Bandler, a mathematician, who colaborated in a study of human achievement.

Grinder and Bandler studied experts or exemplars to identify the difference between competence and excellence. The result was:

• A process for modelling exemplary performance and making it available to others in way that traditional training is unlikely to achieve.
